A Surgeon-Scientist Shaping the Future of Heart Care

Dr Subodh Verma, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FAHA, FCAHS, is an internationally recognized cardiac surgeon–scientist and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery (formerly Atherosclerosis, 2007-17) and is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

His work spans cardiac surgery, cardiometabolic medicine, heart failure, atherosclerosis, peripheral artery disease, regenerative medicine, and clinical trials, with contributions that have helped shape cardiovascular science and patient care in Canada and around the world.

His honours include Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in Clinical Medicine (since 2022), the 2023 Cumming School of Medicine Alumnus of Distinction for Research, the 2021 University of Toronto Lister Prize, the Howard Morgan Award for Distinguished Achievements in Cardiovascular Research, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Gold Medal in Surgery.

Beyond the operating room and laboratory, Dr. Verma is a TEDx speaker and public educator whose message draws on lessons from more than 5,000 human hearts to explore breakthrough thinking, resilience, equity, and the power of interdependence.

Editorial Leadership & Guidelines

He is Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Cardiology; Associate Editor of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and European Journal of Heart Failure; and Editorial Consultant for JACC.

Dr. Verma contributes to Canadian and American practice guidelines on atrial fibrillation, antiplatelet therapy, cardiac surgery, cardiorenal protection, diabetes, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease. He chairs the Scientific Program Committee of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons and has served the AHA Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia since 2008.

CardioLink & Clinical Trials

He holds or has recently held leadership roles in numerous global heart-failure, cardiometabolic and atherosclerosis trials that have reshaped clinical guidelines recommendations.

To support surgical evidence, he founded CardioLink in 2015, uniting cardiac surgeons nationwide to perform practice-changing trials; CardioLink has since broadened to cardiometabolic studies and produced 40+ papers, with several trials presented as late-breakers at AHA and ESC.

Translational Laboratory & VRCE

Dr. Verma also directs a pre-clinical and translational laboratory. He pioneered the new concept of vascular regenerative cell exhaustion (VRCE) in cardiometabolic disease and demonstrated that South Asian individuals, who bear higher cardiometabolic burdens, show greater VRCE than white people of European ancestry. He holds two U.S. patents, and his program is funded by national peer-reviewed agencies and industry partners for investigator-initiated studies.
